Melbourne Cup Day

Yesterday was Melbourne Cup Day – the race that stops a nation and a public holiday for many in the Melbourne metropolitan area. I headed north again with friends, to meet friends, for a lovely day out.

We had a pit stop at Woodend and saw the first of many magnificent rhododendrons

Must be the perfect conditions for this plant as they were everywhere, huge and colourful! There was some man made colour too with these dresses attracting the eye

The day was very warm, muggy and humid – not my favourite type of weather! – and I melted even further at the sight of these, sale price and all!

No doubt our friends in the northern hemisphere would appreciate them.

After a cuppa and cake – sorry had eaten most of it before I remembered the camera, so not a good look! – it was on to our final destination……

We came back from our garden wandering to a lavish lunch of scrumptious rolls…

A storm was brewing and while we feasted thunder rolled and crashed around us. We’d just moved into the house when the heavens opened, rain poured from the heavy grey clouds, and finally, a cool breeze arrived. After watching The Race and seeing Green Moon win (no, I didn’t back it – or anything for that matter!), there was time for some show and tell.

…the above from Joan, and these below from Anthea…

Remarkable workmanship, don’t you think? Even more so in reality!

Then it was time to brave the elements, make a dash for the car and drive home in the rain.

‘Twas a lovely day, despite the inclement conditions; friends, food and quilting overcome all!!

Happy stitching

Thank you so much for sharing the photographs of the beautiful garden. Memories of my grandmother’s garden came flooding back seeing the rhododendrons and wisteria. Simply stunning. What a lovely day.

We were in Melbourne 7 years ago at the time of the Cup, and we loved the buzz round the city …. and all the women wearing fabulous dresses and fascinators. What a fabulous day out (but I would have to be absolutely frozen before I would buy a woolly hat like those ones!) The garden is beautiful, the food and drink wonderful …… and the applique is stunning!! I shall have to save my pennies to visit you at Cup time!!
